Onelec has specialized in electrical equipment since 2006. This close-knit company, based in the Loire department of France, distributes its own products and those of partner brands across several channels: big-box home improvement stores, professional distributors, and online through various marketplaces and specialized websites. Since 2009, Onelec has managed its product catalog on Magento, using a feed aggregator (ShoppingFeed) to distribute content across marketplaces. Over the years, this marketplace business grew significantly, prompting the sales department to consider implementing a PIM geared toward marketplaces. The company first had a custom PIM built by a service provider. A few years later, it turned to Synolia x Akeneo to implement a more comprehensive solution that could address its new internationalization and multichannel challenges.
Onelec, an electrical equipment specialist, distributes its products across several channels, in stores and online, with strong marketplace activity. In 2009, it adopted a PIM custom-built by an external provider, embracing a product information management culture early on. However, after several years of use, the custom solution reached its limits: dependence on the provider for any change, a lack of flexibility, and growing automation needs. In 2023, Onelec decided to implement a new PIM that would be more powerful, scalable, and future-proof. After benchmarking the available solutions, it chose Akeneo, with Synolia as its integration partner.
Onelec follows a global distribution strategy, centralizing data from its online and offline sales channels (home improvement stores, professional distributors, marketplaces, and specialized websites).
The company sees the PIM as a core component of its information system, one that makes collaboration between departments easier and cuts down on repetitive work. The teams using the PIM also expect a tool that gives them more autonomy to evolve and optimize product data.
Synolia supported the Onelec teams in structuring and modeling data in the Akeneo PIM. We also handled the tool’s integration into the information system.
“Today we keep moving forward with Synolia because the PIM evolves every day, and we need a partner who can support us, a partner who knows our business.”
Our support: scoping and specifications phase (attribute listing, data modeling…), testing, go-live, training, and application maintenance.
The scoping phase, and making sure every stakeholder understood the project, was a crucial step in this PIM project. Everyone involved had to speak the same language and agree on how data would be modeled in the tool.
Synolia also worked on integrating the PIM with other services in Onelec’s information system.
The company has five users (sales and e-commerce team) who actively complete product information. Around ten other users regularly access the PIM to look up product information.
“Our e-commerce teams have really embraced the PIM. It is an improvement we had been waiting for a while. We already know what a PIM brings.”
For the teams in charge of in-store distribution, it is a new way of working that changes habits, especially given the significant effort required to complete product information and ensure an optimal database.
With 6,000 SKUs integrated, Onelec now has structured product information and a high-performing PIM that matches its growth ambitions.
The Akeneo PIM helps Onelec manage its product pages more effectively and improve its visibility. Creating new product attributes is also easy, with full autonomy. Onelec’s sales team also plans to use Akeneo’s data quality score feature on its product pages to keep improving them.
Onelec has a strong international presence, notably in Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Romania. Thanks to translation rules and artificial intelligence, the teams save valuable time translating product information.
“We used to spend a week translating 10 product pages. Now, thanks to translation rules, our catalog is translated instantly. Everything is in place, and opening new markets has become very easy. We were able to enter the Dutch market very quickly.”
The Akeneo PIM went live in March 2024. Since then, the teams have kept optimizing the tool and rolling out new features. They are particularly interested in asset management features (Asset Manager) and API connections with marketplaces.
